Performance FAQ
How can I prepare for Maïssane to perform at my event?
The dancer will need a private area in which to change and do the last touches on her appearance. Clear out a space for the dancer to perform. There should be a clear path for the dancer to enter. Bellydancers are usually happy to perform around and amongst tables, but they do require some room to maneuver. The choice of props may be limited by the amount of space available.
How long is the show?
A typical show is between 25 - 40 minutes. The belly dancer may use finger cymbals, veils or sword. When appropriate, the show may include audience participation, for example, the guest of honor may be asked to bellydance!
What is a typical performance like?
For an Arabic routine, the dancer may enter with a veil, perform to a classical Raqs Sharqi composition, with a folkloric piece, followed by a drum solo, and then an Arabic pop song for audience participation.
Is it appropriate for children?
Yes, the bellydance show is family friendly. Children also love dancing!
Will the dancer bring music?
The bellydancer will provide an Arabic music CD and the venue should provide the sound system. Usually the dancer will stay out of sight until the beginning of the music.
What kind of music is used?
Depending on your preference, music can range from classical Arabic to modern pop.
What about audience participation?
The audience can always participate by clapping along, zaghareeting (trilling with the tongue), or shouting encouraging phrases like "Aiwa", or "Opa" depending on the culture. The dancer will often choose a few people from the audience to come dance with her. Please note that you must let Maïssane know if there are any special guests of honor who should be especially selected to dance. At weddings, it is popular to bring both the bride & groom out to dance.
Will Maïssane stay and join my party?
In order to maintain the mystery, it is not recommended for dancers to stay after their performance. The dancer is usually happy to dance with the guests during the audience participation part of her show.
Is tipping appropriate?
It is culturally appropriate to tip dancers and it is often a fun way for an audience member to participate in the show. It is always appropriate to tip by showering bills over the dancer, or by handing the dancer the tips after the show. It can also be added to the payment.
How far in advance should I make the booking?
It is always better to book in advance for best availability. Friday and Saturday nights should be booked at least 2 weeks in advance. The Christmas holiday period (December-January) and wedding season (May - September) tend to book out completely.
What kind of payment is accepted?
The payment is due immediately after the show. You can pay by cash or personal check. Paypal payments can be arranged if you pay in advance.
